So, every 5 years the USDA and Congress have to reauthorize The National School Lunch Program, which feeds over 30 million students each year.
They have a chance to update and revise nutrition standards in order to address rising health issues with America's children.
But since the food and beverage lobbyists have long had a strong hold on politician in Washington, some nutrition standards haven't been updated for DECADES!
So, now in 2009, with childhood obesity on the rise, the USDA decided to delegate the school lunch revisions to the Institute of Medicine (IOM)for a "more science-based" approach.
The IOM held a "scientific discussion" on Jan 28th to analyze how to tackle this crucial element in the health of our kids.
But I went there to look at who was REALLY in that room.
Having studied the food industry's influence in politics for a while, I had planned before I went there to walk around the room with a camera and zoom in on EVERY name tag in the room.
I then brought that footage back, printed out a wide shot of the crowd, and then labeled everyone accordingly. This is how I was able to establish that hilarious "corporate logo" shot in the video.
Also, did you know that nutrition standards regarding snack food and a la carte items in school haven't been updated since 1979!?!?
I really hope people pay close attention to this because the food lobbyists will be throwing tons of money at this and a chance to help the health of our kids will once again, fall away.
